Mindless Thoughts.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, July 29, 2016 1 comments

I just cannot tell you how I spend many nights staring at my bookshelves. I have so much to say and so many stories to tell. But the words that my mind is carefully churning do not reach the tips of my fingers. It's on these nights, I particularly wonder if I can write only when my life breaks into tiny chunks and vanishes into nothingness. There are nights and then, there are these nights. When it is raining so beautifully outside my window and I sit inside, staring at the things around me wondering if I can muster some sentences that make sense or sound warm. I stop listening to music, I stop reading and only pay attention to the raindrops creating a slow pattern of music that I go on and on to.

It's on nights like these that I think what am I going to do if I wake up one morning and fail to put words to paper?

Remember.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Tuesday, June 28, 2016 2 comments

It is raining delightfully as we walk towards the parking lot. Everything looks beautiful and bright. The green trees look greener, the red car looks lovelier, and the people look like they have nowhere to go and nothing to rush about. You make a usual comment about the weather and I nod. I am in awe of everything around us, from the place we leave behind to the place we now go towards. The raindrops make a playful pattern on your window panes as we settle down. It is a sight too good to overlook, so we sit inside, engulfed in silence and the gentle pitter-patter of the rain outside. I tell you how much I love to slack off in a weather this dreamy and you tell me about the pile of work that is slowly accumulating at your desk. As you take my hand into yours, I know there are things you wish I'd say and things that you already know without saying. I know you keep telling me that there's a lot of time ahead of us. But time is slipping away, quietly and quickly. Days have turned into weeks. And weeks into months. The seasons too have changed. From a horrible summer to a magical monsoon. The next season might bring our way everything or nothing. But if it brings nothing, will you still remember this moment of solitude? Will you still think fondly of the moment we spent in the parking lot of a cafe we'd visit only when we have nowhere to go, not worrying a bit about the future or what tomorrow brings our way?

Rain.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Sunday, May 01, 2016 0 comments

The windows on the fourth floor were slowly unbolted,
The speeding car on the street leisurely came to a halt,
The child in red and his mother huddled under a black umbrella,
The cats were nowhere to be seen but the dogs were frisky,
The streets were almost desolate and looked spotlessly clean,
The trees looked greener and the flowers were dangling up above,
And as I stood on my balcony with a cup of coffee in my hand,
It looked like everyone was savouring the first rush of rain.

My Rain.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Wednesday, November 04, 2015 0 comments

You were my rain. Maybe you still are.

I know I met you in the Summer, but you were never my Summer. It was on a rainy Saturday morning that we watched our first movie together and it was the first rainy Saturday evening when you held me close to your heart. I've lost the count of the number of hot cups of coffee we had every time it rained or the amount of my pictures that kept occupying the nooks and corners of your phone. It was also during the rainy season when we made tall promises to each other, breaking each of them in the following season.

Maybe it's true. I can never picture you against the background of another season. It's only on a rainy day, you walk into my thoughts, in your warm, black jacket, holding the cup of coffee with both your arms and laughing at my rather silly jokes.

You were always, and will always be my rain. Just like the rain, you were always mine, but never really mine.

The Little Joys of Life!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, February 13, 2015 2 comments

“Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.”

― L.M. Montgomery, The Story Girl

I have been counting my highs and lows this week.

Yes, that's what free time does to you. I  haven't had time to think about the trivial things for quite a time now. Needless to mention, I pay a lot of attention to the inconsequential things.

The tiniest of things that do not matter to you, they matter to me. So the next time you cringe at my Instagram profile, I urge you to think twice.

Tell me, have you ever wondered what are the little joys of life?

Cannot think of any? Let me explain.

Do you remember that moment when you first saw your younger sibling? A newborn looking all pink and staring at you with big black eyes.

Or that night when you sat with your best friend watching 'Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani' over cake and cups of coffee, talking about love and its enigma?

For instance, do you still think of those days when you find the man you love walk towards you? Have you ever tried figuring out why that person can make your day better by just walking towards you?

The little joys of life, I tell you!

While talking about the little joys of life, have you ever wondered how the smile on your mother's face can make you forget all your woes after a long day at work?

For that matter, do you love that moment when you find your cup of coffee still warm and strong?

Do you still feel the flutters and butterflies that your first love gave you? Or that period when you loved going to lectures because your English teacher was absolutely amazing?

Have you ever had a moment when your father read something you wrote or painted and appreciate you for the good work?

Or that incident when you gave your unused clothes to a person with limited means. The joy on that person's face illuminated the joy within you.

I am sure we have moped around in pursuit of healing our broken hearts. Can you still remember the smile on your friend's face after she has gotten herself through a terrible heartbreak?

Of all the joys, we try and remember, we never forget the happiness that our first salary gives us.

Or that day when you go out on a long drive and a sudden rush of rain surprises you. Sometimes, you find an old shoebox full of photographs and polaroids that takes you on a trip of nostalgia.

Your childhood home, the room that once belonged to you, your window and the raindrop dripping on its sill.

Your grandmother and the giggles you share with her; your grandfather and the stories he tells you; the stream near your grandparents' place and the memories it evokes.

The aroma of old books, and the poems you have written in your first journal.

The playful Summers and the solitary Monsoons!

The little joys of life, I tell you!

They are so tiny and almost ignored.

The little joys of life are everywhere. They lie in your memories. They lie here and there. They lie in you.

You just need to take a break and look for them.

Words And Reflections!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Monday, December 01, 2014 4 comments

“She had the world’s worst poker face: her feelings floated across them like reflections on a still pond.”

― Jojo Moyes

She finally sat down to write with a pen and a notepad, overlooking the fairy lights up high in her room. The faint rustling of the trees in her courtyard distracted her time and again. She let her thoughts go astray for a moment, and gathered herself again.
Too many adjectives describing him? Edit relentlessly, said one of her post-it-notes.
Look for imperfections, said another.
As she was scratching her head looking for imperfections, there was yet another distraction. She dashed into her balcony to see the raindrops adorning the streets, young couples running towards trees for shelter, dogs and cats cuddling under carts and cars, and children with bright red umbrellas running in circles with paper boats in their hands.
Surreal. She muttered. But not again.
She sat down to write again, not letting anything deter her focus. She did not want to be flippant this time.
He was noble, he had his off moments; he was absurd, but being imperfect wasn't one of his liabilities. Like a haiku poem, he was mysteriously beautiful. Of course, he was oblivious to it.
She tried to recreate his voice but she could not. She tried hard to recollect his figure but it was distorted in time. She closed her eyes and tried to picture his smile, but she could barely picture it.
She tried to remember all the conversations they had and this time, she could remember all of it. Words meant everything to her. She had a flair at remembering every word ever said to her. And she did.
She crumpled the paper and opened a fresh one.
"The sea fell in love with the sand," she wrote in big, bold letters.

It Is Not A Love-story!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Tuesday, September 17, 2013 2 comments

She sat cross-legged on the couch. He sat on the bean bag.

"So what's the deal?" He asked.

"No way. I am not letting you into the excerpts of my diary." She almost yelled at him.

"Oh come on, I've read a part of it anyway. Be a sport and tell me. Who's The One? I won't laugh. I promise."

"Please. No."

"I insist. Please."

"Ugh, okay, promise me you won't laugh. Truth be told, I haven't met him yet. He is just fictional. But he is The One. And that's what I want."

"Whatever. Let's just get with it now."

"Okay, okay. Umm, so, yes, William Darcy like. Neat. Eddie Vedder follower. A perfect relationship. So Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant-ish. First kiss under the stars. Long drives in the rain. Keats poetry. Basketball champion and...."

"Hahahahahaha. Stop right there. A guy like that wouldn't exist. Even if he did, I am sure he would be nothing less than lame. And just for the record, basketball and Darcy don't go together."

"They do. They so do. In my world."

"Yes, your world is fictitious and LAME. Let me get back to my football now. Give me the remote control. I have wasted enough time already."

Fifteen Priceless Moments!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Thursday, July 04, 2013 6 comments

1. Receiving emails from strangers appreciating your work. Lately, I have been receiving a lot of them and they simply make my day.

2. The food your mother makes on your birthday. I believe nothing can beat that. No restaurant can ever match up the taste.

3. The warmth of your bed after a long, tiring day. And the aroma of coffee wafting through your room.

4. Fighting with someone and realizing that you were smiling throughout the argument.

5. Walking down the road with your four year old cousin and listen to him talk about his friends at school. Everything is just so perfect in those moments. Your little cousin, his laughter, his teeny-weeny dimples and the friendly banter. You don't need anything more. Gold!

6. The bittersweet emotions you feel on the last day of your school, and college. That feeling of happiness that you are finally free but oh-oh, you don't want to grow up yet. Wearing a back-pack, holding a book in your arm, walking with your friends and talking senseless things somehow make a lot of sense than reading Paulo Coelho. No offense!

7. That awesome feeling of walking on cold, wet grass!

8. The arrival of your father from a long official trip. And digging his bag open to check if there are any goodies. Gold!

9. That lovely moment when you find old, battered pictures of you, your family and friends. So many memories!

10. Bunking school to watch Pokemon.

11. First love!

12. That cute moment when you see the person you love the most after a painfully long forty days and the world around you ceases to matter.

13. A pillow fight with your brother!  :D

14. A night out with a friend and telling horror stories to each other.

15. That amazing moment when you are going on a long drive in rain and your favourite song plays on the radio.

Pitter-Patter!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, May 11, 2012 20 comments

"You know your day is going to be awesome when you wake up to the sound rain-drops hitting your window pane."
Ah! Such bliss, if you ask me.

I slept in the afternoon with this thought "I need to update my blog in the evening" in my mind. And yippee, I wake up to see the beautiful rain out of my window and oops, not so beautiful rain drenching my jeans in the balcony. :-|
My mom asked me if I wanted coffee and of course I wanted it. (Duh! Is that even a question to be asked? I would love to have coffee all the time. When I say all the time, I really do mean it.)

My sister too wanted to have coffee and since, she is a tenth grader, she considered herself too young to have coffee and made cold coffee for herself. Well, I don't see a point here. I mean, coffee is coffee, right? Hot or cold, it is coffee. :-D

I have been wanting to do a picture post since two weeks and couldn't write anything. Thank you, The Royal Laziness!
But hey, I have so many pictures on rain. Why not write a post on rain? And this thought dragged me from the balcony to my bedroom and here we go, the pictures. *Excited!*

This is the first picture that I have clicked at Inorbit Mall, Hyderabad and this is my all time favourite.

My friend Asisha's palm. :-D

This picture has been clicked in Chandanagar, Hyderabad.

Yet another rainy day picture clicked last year. The following picture was clicked on the same day.

This has been clicked on the same day. :-)

This picture has been taken on my way to the college. Last year, again!

This is one of my favourite pictures and please ignore the clarity. My Corby has clicked more than 3000 pictures in the past one and half year and still is managing to click some wonderful pictures.

And this is it. I am done and going back to enjoy the rain
