A Table For One!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Thursday, April 09, 2015 6 comments

It is a common misconception that I am a people person. Maybe I am. Maybe I am not.

But if I am gifted the opportunity of choosing my solitude over the company of people for at least 10 days a month, I would gladly accept it, and quite graciously at that.

Of course, I love people, I love listening to their stories and to their tales on hope and endless possibilities of attaining something totally unattainable. But I also like to sit in peace, and read fascinating stories of the same people in the form of words and metaphors.

I guess I really like to oscillate between the two worlds - the one brimming with people, and the other filled with silence.

I would not call myself a recluse, but, there are moments when I prefer to do things alone - You know, like shopping, traveling, and eating out.

While one can do most of the things alone, the problem occurs only when you are trying to eat out alone.

This happens with me most of the times, and it is quite funny. I walk into a certain restaurant and ask for a table for one, and I find the waiter giving me a really sympathetic look, and much to my horror, I am given a table right in the center of the room.

I don’t know, does the waiter think I am all by myself (Read desperately alone) and hence, I need to sit in the middle of bantering people and chaos?

I am not sure.

Because when I ask for a corner table, the waiter gives me a once-over and asks, “Are you sure, ma’m?” And for reasons I cannot fathom, I earn the wrath of either a bad table or really pesky, overly helpful service.

You have no clue how many times I control my urge to tell them that I am here, only to enjoy good food while I am reading, and to remind them, that nothing is wrong with me.

There are a lot of people who ask if my solitude benefits me, and I tell them that it does in many million ways.

For one thing, it increases my productivity. The fact that I am able to read or write without any human contact, or my mobile phone constantly giving me constant notifications about mundane things is an achievement in its own league, if I might say.

A person who appreciates his solitude would appreciate the company of people even more. His attachment with nature and self increases leaps and bounds.

Okay, that was deep yet stupid stuff.

But let me admit, the whole point of writing this post is, this - dear waiters, let me devour my pasta in peace. No, I do not need sangria to wipe my tears away, and I definitely do not need several helpings of cheese to lead myself to the Prince Charming.

I am pretty complacent with whatever I have, and doing right now.

However, if there is something that I would really love, it is this - a corner table in a coffee shop adorned with fairy lights, a copy of Italo Calvino’s Difficult Loves, the aroma of coffee and a cup of coffee in my hand, good music playing rather faintly in the background, and people sitting in a distance talking about love and literature, and laughing at humourous things that tickle them.

Because that would be the perfect end to a solitary day at my table for one.

To Grandma, With Love!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Wednesday, October 09, 2013 4 comments

A rainy evening drifted me into the memories of my childhood. If only my grandmother was there…she would have made me a cup of steaming coffee and sit beside me, knitting and touching my hair fondly.

I vividly remember the first vision of my Grandmother. I remember a beautiful woman getting down the train and I remember running into her arms and inhaling her wonderful scent. I remember how she stood by me and influenced my life.

Every summer, my cousins and I visited Calcutta to spend vacations with our grandparents. How enthusiastic we were to meet her for she stacked up the kids’ room with lovely presents and sweets and above everything, we loved her so much.

As time flew, we never had much time to spend with her. We hardly spent a ten odd days with her and those were the days when I saw tears in her eyes when we parted. I could never fathom why a strong woman like her had tears in her eyes! Fortunately, I got to spend six months with her when I was in high school. Those were some of the best days of my life; those were the days when she cooked delicious food for me and bought me pretty clothes; those were the days when she sat on the stair-case of the house anticipating my return from college. Six months later, when we parted again, I saw her in tears. Again. This time, I cried too.

Engineering kept me even busier and we met for only five days a year. I missed her but my college life was demanding too. My grandmother always had a habit of being the first person to wish me on my birthday and examinations. It was my fifth semester’s first examination and she promised to call me after my exam. I waited for her call and I never received it because she had a cardiac arrest. I messed my examinations. But I had nothing else in my mind. I wanted to get done with the semester, and go meet her. I waited desperately for the last exam to end.

May 1st, 2011.

Finally, my exams ended and I left for Vizag. She was so happy to see me; she took my arms in hers and cried. I saw nothing but love and fear in her eyes. She wanted to be with us, she wanted to spend more time with her children and grand-children. She just wanted more time.

Six months later, just when everything was fine, we received a call. The call that changed everything! The call that said she was no more; the call that still makes me tremble! We started immediately and the next morning, when I saw her frail body, I felt so helpless, standing there, looking at her and sobbing. I was devastated. I fervently hoped for all the time to come back…I fervently hoped that she would come back, hug me and narrate me all the stories of her childhood…I fervently hoped that she would come back and make me chuckle loud by cracking funny jokes.

And yet again, this birthday, I waited for her call—the call that would scream a cheerful ‘Happy Birthday’ in my sleepy ears. The call that was the starter of my Birthday for the past twenty-one years!

Five Dream Jobs! :D

By Sunaina Patnaik at Monday, October 07, 2013 6 comments

“My job is to scream cockle-doodle-doo. Don't blame me if the sun doesn't rise.”

9-5 jobs! How many of us are already warming up to this idea? The famous myth says that 9-5 jobs kill creativity, wreck your social life, ruin your friendships and relationships. Well, it is a myth. At least, in my case.

I digress.

So, we all have an image of these oh-so-perfect jobs in our mind and in many cases, the moolah doesn't matter. Right? Hey, I am talking about the 'not-very-ambitious, creativity is all' lot here. You invest bankers are doing just fabulous. I am talking about us, the non-serious, goofy people.

On an unrelated note, I imagined eight dream jobs but I didn't want the post to be very lengthy (and boring). So, I cut them down to five.

*Drumroll*

1) The Foodie: Seriously, how many of us have this on our list? I mean getting paid for eating food is the best job ever. Everytime I watch "Highway On My Plate" and "The Foodie" on the television, I cannot fathom why I don't find such stimulating (Yes, I used stimulating because I don't want to come across as a glutton. Idiocy, I know) jobs.

They don't just eat a lot. They get to travel a lot as well. Gee!

2) Travel Writer: They say traveling is the only thing that makes you rich. Word! Travel writers have such wonderful experiences, don't they? They eat different cuisines, meet new people, listen to fascinating stories, take beautiful pictures, make the less fortunate one jealous, and like an icing on the cake, they get to write in beautiful locations. Awesome!

3) Book Reviewer: Imagine locking yourself up in a room full of wonderful books. Yay! Could there be a better job?

4) The Dreamer: Okay now, dreaming isn't a simple job, okay? It is a rather painful job to remember and recollect your dreams. Wouldn't it be lovely if we get paid for dreaming? I know, I know, it is SO Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

I would jump and scream in joy if my boss says, "Sleep for the whole month, dream, send me a report of your dreams, and you'll get paid.

What can I say? He would be the best boss ever, my friend.

5) Movie Critic: If there is one job where money wouldn't really matter to me, it is this. I would watch four movies and a few episodes from a sitcom everyday and a lot more for this job. (Does this sound like a career objective in a C.V? Oops!)

This, indeed, is a dream job. Call me a stereotype, but I would watch Indian movies and only those movies starring Jude Law (Say, a current obsession? It will wear off in a week.)

Like Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life", I will shed tears of joy if I do any of these jobs.
Oh, I actually have three more dream jobs. But I will come up with another post soon.

So, what are your dream jobs?

Love a Guy who...

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, May 03, 2013 18 comments

Love a guy who enjoys the little things in his life and makes a big deal about the joyous moments. Love a guy who loves the smell of the earth when it rains and enjoys an ice-cream with it. He will make sure that you experience all the little things in your life. Even better, he will make you appreciate all those little things. Love a guy who knows what you love to eat, love a guy who knows what you do when you are cross, love a guy who knows how to please you when you are down. That guy will do everything to bring a smile on your face.

Love a guy who takes you to interesting places to eat, love a guy who shares his yummy pasta with you and enjoys every spoon, love a guy who takes you for a long drive and treats you your favourite flavour of ice-cream, Belgian Dark Chocolate. Yummy! And yet, he makes sure that you eat his favourite flavour of ice cream. Love a guy with whom you can enjoy every moment including the fights and the arguments. Love a guy who loves pictures..he will make every moment amazing. Love a guy who makes your morning coffee time memorable.

Love a guy who fights with you for your time, love a guy who understands your mood swings and does not make a fuss about it, love a guy who gives you a bar of chocolate when your mood is taking a toll on you and smiles at you when you trip on that chocolate. Love a guy who takes you to his favourite places and makes you a part of his memories..that guy will make you a part of your life and that is the biggest step for him.

Love a guy who knows your favourite writer and understands it completely when you quote her, love a guy who takes an interest in the books you read and the things you do, love a guy who picks the clothes and shoes for you and honestly, it makes him very happy. Love a guy who acts paranoid when he cannot get that favourite piece of thing for you and see the disappointment on his face. Doesn't it make you go, OMG?

Love a guy who is creative, love a guy who takes a deep interest in art and of course, your hobbies. He is making an effort to be a part of your life. Love a guy who knows what he has to do with his life and he will make sure you are a part of it. Love a guy with whom you can cuddle on a lazy Sunday afternoon, love a guy who complains a lot while watching your favourite chic-lit yet watches it with you because it makes you happy.

Love a guy who wakes you up early in the morning to show you his favourite sunrise spot and takes you to his favourite place to eat the breakfast, love a guy who holds your arm when he drives, love a guy who steals glances at you when you are doing your work.

Love a guy who loves food and you know what to do when is angry at you, love a guy who takes his time to read a book to enjoy the plot...

In short, love a guy who loves you for what you are. Love a guy who cries for you for he will love no one the way he loves you. Love a guy with whom you can share your darkest secrets and feel good about it. Love that guy for what he is and embrace his negative traits for we all know he is worth it! :)
