No Internet. Just a Getaway.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Sunday, October 19, 2014 3 comments

“We refuse to turn off our computers, turn off our phone, log off Facebook, and just sit in silence, because in those moments we might actually have to face up to who we really are.”
― Jefferson Bethke

What happens over the weekend stays with the weekend.

I've always wanted to say lines like these when I was a teenager, but even as a teenager, I was a pretty normal (Actually, boring) person who really chose books over anything.

This weekend, I've tried doing things a little differently. For starters, I traveled to a place I love a lot. And I've survived two whole days without my phone and laptop.

I would not call the experience overwhelming. But it was a much coveted break from my otherwise monotonic weekend.

I read, ate, consumed copious amounts of coffee, watched TV (Actual TV. I do not know when was the last time I actually enjoyed watching TV), played Scrabble on board all by myself. I did all these things without taking pictures for Instagram, or tweeting lame stuff like, "Coffee time!"

Of course, things like eating ice-cream go unsaid. Because I just cannot do without it.

I watched the sunrise and the sunset without any filter. I scribbled a lot of things in my notebook, and read a magazine without any interruption from WhatsApp.

I made real time conversations with people. I have decided, no more WhatsApp for me. If I want to make conversations with people, it has to be in person. If people want to make conversations with me, it has to be in person or over a call.

Perhaps a year ago, I met this man who suggested me to try not using WhatsApp, but I mocked him in his face, and I still remember he was a laughing stock for my group of friends and me for at least a week. He did not have a Facebook profile or WhatsApp account.

Looks like he wasn't entirely wrong!

Ever since its inception, Internet has been killing our imagination. All I do on the internet is read some good articles (which is a great thing), watch movies or sitcoms, but I waste most of my time on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

And I think, I will stick to enjoying the aroma of coffee rather than posting it on Instagram! (Not all the time, of course.)

I've made a resolution to keep the Internet (My phone and the laptop too) off every weekend; I do not care even if the world is falling apart, I will not waste my time on the Internet on Saturdays or Sundays.

I'd rather live them for the simplest pleasures of life!

P.S. It is Monday. I am on the Internet and I hate it.

It Is Not a Cake-walk, Baby!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Wednesday, May 15, 2013 7 comments

"I love you. You complete me."
"Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at hello."
-Jerry Maguire

So, I sit down with a tub of ice-cream and watch Jerry Maguire. I love this movie for two reasons-Tom Cruise and the movie is epic, isn't it?

Basically, I am a sucker for romantic comedies. Of course, I do like the occasional superhero movies, horror and goth, and the like but the movie section of my laptop is majorly filled with romantic comedies.

I am quite intrigued by the 90s movies..you know Pretty Woman, Jerry Maguire, When Harry Met Sally(1989 though), Before Sunrise and I wonder if things have massively changed in the 2000s. And frankly, they have! Things have changed from "It must have been love" in 'Pretty Woman' to "You spin my head right round" in 'The Ugly Truth' and it makes me go oww!

That is the moment I started relating things with reality. Have the times changed too? Well, yes, they have. I mean, do we still have those people who say, "I will stick to you through dreadful misery and stand by your side in the gloomy times"? Or is it just that all I see are those who say, "Hey you know what? We held onto each other in all the joy and mirth. Why stick to each other during pain? Let us choose the easy way out and chuck out all the drama, trauma and yeah, whatever. So we done?"

Of course, it is not so simple, right? We all go through problems. Crappy problems, messy problems, problems that do not even come into the vicinity of problems, tiny problems, and the metaphors! The other day, my friend updated a huge Facebook status for her boy-friend. She was questioning his love for her on a social networking site for not recharging her damned mobile phone on time. DUH!!!! Really? Is that even a problem? Girl, do you actually know what a problem really is?

I don't know! We all live in this selfish, cynical world and we never give a thought about what is worth and what is not. Isn't it simple? I mean, seriously, would you want to lose someone so close to you just for a recharge card? It is not about the recharge card, actually. It is about letting minute things spoil our relationships. Not just with our partners or whatever but with our friends too.

We all make mistakes. Isn't it? I have done tons of them and yes, I know, writing this post does not make me a saint. I jump to the worst conclusions in a matter of seconds and mess up with my head. And by the time, I realize what I have done, it is too late. The damage is already done, nay? What could you do about it? Honestly, nothing! But you do not stop cribbing either.

So, well, may be, we should all give a lot of thought before blowing up things, and you know, updating silly Facebook statuses that are nothing but cringe-worthy. As an after-thought, you can actually tweet about them. Ha! Anyway, we should just think and act. Like..like...umm...you know the way we act when we do Math?

Relationships add so much to your life. Likewise, they pull a lot away. It is for us to decide if it worth it. Love does not need hard work but sustaining the complications and the plights need a lot of hard work and you should be ready to do it every freaking day.

You do not have to open the pandora's box and say, "Hey, it is easy." Instead, say, "It is horrid but I shall find a way out" for relationships are not a cake-walk, baby!

25 Things that Every Person Should Do!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Saturday, April 27, 2013 11 comments

1. Read. Read a lot.

2. Write. Write everything. Write about every moment that you experience, write about every memory that is awesome, write about every moment that is not-so-awesome, write till you are lost in your words. Write till you are exhausted. Write till you know you cannot write anymore

Or even better, write a book.

3. Travel. Maintain a journal. Write down everything. Take pictures. Make memories.

4. Fall in love.

5. Get hurt. Fall apart. Cry out loud. Push everything away. Make yourself numb and immune to all the crap happening around you.

Experience the pain. And write down how it feels! No, really.

6. Write a song. Compose it. Refrain from singing it out loud. Or may be, you should just sing. You never know!

7. Go on a sabbatical.

8. Take a break from Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Quora, Whatsapp, and of course, your mobile phone. It is easy. Try it.

9. Sleep a lot. Take a break from work and sleep for 48 hours straight. You know how awesome it feels?

10. Eat.A.Lot.

11. Sleep under the stars with your friends.

12. Wake up early in the morning and let the sun-rays play on the face of your loved one. Well, do you need anything more than such a beautiful sight? No, you do not!

13. Make a difference.

14. Spend a day eating a yummy chocolate cake and try not to feel guilty about the calories and all.

15. Go back-packing. Alone! Yes.

16. Quit your job. Find a job you love the most.

17. Spend all your money. Be broke.

18. Learn something new each day.

19. Slap all those idiots who ask you to 'move on.' It is so easy for people to say that. Obviously! They do not put themselves in your shoes and think, right? And if you have ever asked someone to move on..well, you know whom to slap first!

20. Talk about yourself to a stranger and let him judge you. Brutally!

And accept the criticism. Or the good stuff. ;)

21. Make promises. And promise yourself that you will fulfill every promise. After all, promises are meant to be fulfilled, isn't it?

22. Take a leap of faith and do the things that you badly want to do in spite of knowing and sensing the repercussions.

23. Shop till you drop.

24. Figure out what you need. Figure out what you want. Make a plan and make sure that everything happens according to your plan.

Make every effort to get what you want. What is the use of making plans and all when you cannot fight to achieve them?

25. Make some friends who love you. Love them back and do everything to make them happy.

Lazy Days are Here to Stay! :-|

By Sunaina Patnaik at Wednesday, June 20, 2012 9 comments

Oh well, I am talking about the holidays. There were moments in my life when I desperately waited for holidays to come, or at least the weekends, and even worse, for the Independence Day, for a holiday. You know, how it is, right? The life of an engineer? We get loads of work, and assignments to do. Of course, we never complete them but hey, we pretend like we are the most hard-working creatures on this planet. Anyway, my point is not to disgrace us, The Techies, but to talk about the holidays which have turned me into a lazy bug. Few friends call me hard-working, workaholic and similar things but they are friends and they tend to say such things. Right?

Holidays..umm..holidays! Okay, the things I am doing in the holidays and the things I have learnt.

  • Holidays are fun! But only if they are for a shorter period of time. These long term holidays can be very boring and will get you nowhere.
  • Facebook was so much when I had college. You know, you can talk crap about your lecturers, HOD, and your principal; you can crib about not having holidays; you can bunk classes and update dumb statuses, use Facebook as a mere mean of escaping lectures. I hate to say this but I am missing my crappy college.
  • I am tweeting. Uh huh, not the sensible things. But the senseless things. Well, that is why twitter exists, right? Twitter is so much fun when you are jobless and have nothing worthy to say on Facebook. For instance, 'Yay! I am eating ice-cream', and then 'Yay! My second scoop of ice-cream', or 'Hey! You are a douche-bag' (Basically, things that do not make any sense at all)
  • I thought I would read all the awesome books in holidays. Yes, I am reading but I guess, I went over-board and read some crappy ones too. Just to warn you, never read 'The Boy Next Door' by Meg Cabot. It is pretty much boring and the entire book is in mails. Yes, the story is narrated in the form of e-mails. * Face-palm*
  • When I was in college, I had no time to write. I would sneak out my journal book to write during lectures only to be lectured by my HOD, or even worse, to be screamed at, 'Roll No 6, what are you writing?' Well, obviously I cannot tell her that I was writing shitty things about her.  :D
  • Okay! The above situation is when I had no time to write. Now, I have all the time in the world to write but I do not have any topics to write on. (Topics which might interest me)
  • Music! Ah yes, I have downloaded music from all sites, downloaded music of all my favourite bands and singers, downloaded music from all my favourite movies and now, gave up. I just have too many songs. Now please do not tell me that I haven't downloaded Chris Brown or Justin Bieber, I hate them.
  • When I had college, I saw Indian Idol and its repeat telecasts too. And now? Let alone, the repeat telecasts, I am not able to watch the actual telecasts. Terrible!
  • And oh hey, the movies. I have seen so many movies, so many times that I probably know all the dialogues of Pride and Prejudice even better than Keira and Matthew MacFadyen. Of course, I have seen some wretched movies too. *Sigh*

And honestly I miss going to the college, not for the love of the college but for the best things that these four years of college has given me. I miss getting my jeans dirty in the rain, I miss sleeping during lectures, I miss eating my canteen's half-boiled, half-cooked food, I miss getting lectured for having low attendance, I miss running behind dingy hospitals for medical certificates, I miss breaking the dress code rules. Oh hell, my college wasn't so bad after all.

And, I don't believe I said that! :D

Dead and Gone!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Thursday, April 19, 2012 13 comments

No, I am not talking about any dead people. Relax! This post is about my rants! Hell, I know that we love reading rants. So, lets get going!

My friend circle has slipped from a massive number to an ideal number and this makes me feel better. I had to drag and throw away some people. This post is not about how I kicked them out. Or who they are. This post is about why I had to kick them out.

15 reasons why I kicked them out or kicked you out. (Trust ME, 15 is an understatement!)

1) You have turned into a certified douche-bag! Expletives are the first thing that come to my mind when somebody mentions your name.

2) You love Justin Beiber, Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Selena whatever. Your playlist gives me jitters and makes me go eeew.

3) Hello opportunist! Yes, you, my dear foe. When you wanted to use people for your own good, why rant and talk crap about them?
GET A LIFE!

4) "sup?" "just back from a movie." "With whom did you go?"
Why do you care with whom I went? Is that even a question that people ask?
Sane, normal people ask-"Which movie?"
Dumb, annoying people ask you the address of the theater, location of the wash-room in the theater, and I-don't-know-what!

5) You use 'mah' instead of 'my', 'bah' instead of 'by'. God, when will you realize that you annoy people so much that they would not mind feeding you to the dogs.

6) You tear my books. Even worse, you do not return them back and deny the fact that you ever borrowed it. Bloody liar!

Enough of 'you, you.' I will use 'they' now.

7) They have an identity crisis. Next time I see them, I am going to wish them like this---Hey Anonymous!

8) They forget everything.

9) They pretend. And pretend. And pretend some more.

10) You are a commoner. No goals, no ambitions. You want to be stagnant and boring.
You are such a waste of time.

11) Your Facebook account is voted as the most boring account. No activity, no pictures.
Oh okay there is a picture? Well, let me see.
Eeew! Is that a picture of some WWF member?

12) They look messy.

13) They do not read. They do not know what fun is.

14) You do not follow my blog. :|

15) Are you counting the points? What? I can't even rant?
I hate you too now!

Now that I've spread enough shit on people around me, I will have to go hide in some strange place for safety. ;-)

New Year's Resolutions??

By Sunaina Patnaik at Thursday, March 22, 2012 7 comments

I have secretly sworn on following *SIX* resolutions that I took on this New Year and I must admit that I have failed miserably. Not everyone can follow the resolutions and the person who follows them comes into the category of “I-don’t-know-what”. Okay, they call it "the survival of the fittest" but hello, who cares?

So yeah, what are we good at? Making and breaking promises? Hell yes! :-D Nevertheless, it’s good to have resolutions; they make you feel important and you almost hallucinate that you are following a certain set of guidelines. Period.

And here I go-the six resolutions that have already taken a toll on me and I ended up un-following them just in three months:

1) I will drag and throw away all those clothes that I haven’t worn since an year. I will clean up my closet.
Was I an idiot to make this as one of my resolutions?

2) I will NOT get connected to Internet, Google, mobile, laptop, YouTube, twitter etc. I would rather do some real time tasks.
Okay okay, facebook too. Happy?

3) I will learn all tricks of good cooking and will turn into a master chef. And I turned into a master hogger.

4) I will maintain a diary. Yes, I will. I will make an entry of all my major goof-ups, daily misnomers, and the lessons I have learnt. I have always wanted to maintain a diary since I was a sixth grader and almost all the diaries ended up as the rough copies for my math practice. *Sigh*

But hey, does a blog constitute for a diary?

5) I will stop adding “super” in front of every damned word. I feel like a stupid teenager every time I use that word but I cannot stop using it. :|

6) Focus! Focus! And focus! I should be able to focus and complete all my articles on time before the deadlines sneak. Yes, I will not procrastinate. I will complete my pending work instead of opening my word document and log in to Facebook and day dream.
