Labels and names.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Tuesday, October 17, 2017 1 comments

"It's getting dark. I should probably leave."
"No, don't. Stay."
"I need to get home."
"We can order pizza."
"I have to leave."
"With your favourite toppings."
"Please, you need to understand."
"I won't stop you from eating it with ketchup."
"It's over."
"What's over?"
"Us."
"What us?"
"You know what I mean, whatever's between us."
"What do you mean?"
"We cannot do this any longer."
"I don't get it."
"Of course you do! You're just feigning ignorance."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah."
"One pizza won't hurt."
"You know we won't stop with the pizza. We'll hurt each other. That's what we do. That's what we always do. Eating a pizza or doing anything for that matter never remain as a simple task of doing."
"Then?"
"What then?"
"I want to know where you're going with this."
"I'm telling you we'll hurt each other. That's what we do."
"Nonono...that's what you do. That's what you always do. You always have this vapid urge to run from everything you feel strongly about. It's what you do. You drop things cold, mid-way and never look back."
"I'm just not looking for someone I can emotionally invest in."
"But do you ever?"
"It doesn't matter.
"It does. At least to me."
"I don't know why we have to run in circles about everything we do. Do you derive some kind of fun from this?"
"I just want to know."
"Know what?"
"What we were."
"Some kind of an unfinished business."
"Is that it?"
"Yeah, not everything needs labels and names, you know?"

You Signed Up for This.

By Sunaina Patnaik at Tuesday, February 28, 2017 0 comments
Every time I say you signed up for this,
I wonder if you imagined our togetherness differently,
Because life is built on unfulfilled fantasies and
unchartered territories,
The idea of love as shown in movies is a fable that we are miles away from,
Even if we're grappling in the dark praying to reach the shores of the kind of love we fancied, we might not,
The standards, I guess, were always a fabrication of our silly minds to mock us at what we cannot score,
Maybe I cannot promise you the fantasy,
Maybe I should not,
Because what I can offer you is, a different kind of love,
The one, that's ours, and probably not a figment of imagination,
On days when the sun refuses to shine and you gnaw your own mind, I'll remind you of the person you are,
I won't be the one rescuing you, but I will turn every dark day into a funny poem that you can recall on a day you'll not have me around,
On nights when you find my reason beyond any measure of sanity, I will rather give you a reason, to look beyond the measures,
Because who decides what's sane and what's not?
And on afternoons when time comes to a halt as we sit facing each other at a lunch table, I will  try not to fill the silence with words,
Even when words come easily to me, I will let you be,
For I don't squander love and words,
For when they are uttered, they ruin the possibilities of fathomable probabilities making way for the ineffabilities that my heart isn't made for,
So, take my silence and inability of expressing our bond,
But don't put them in that big brown box with labels, that is due for a return,
Instead, help me in carving them for our wants and needs.

Dreaming Under The Starlit Sky!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Monday, February 23, 2015 8 comments

“Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward and make your dreams come true.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

It has been a long day. I had a tough time explaining the cab driver the route to my office.

My morning coffee wasn't strong enough. My evening coffee wasn't even warm.

My feet ache. The high heels have paid their due. The radio played the music I hate. And my phone stopped working for an hour.

It is a Monday. It has to be dreadful living up to its name, I reckon.

Just when I assumed that, things changed.

I was stuck in traffic listening to a song by Maroon 5. As I was slightly obsessing over Adam Levine's voice, I look outside the window to see a world brimming with different people.

Bantering couples, children going home from tuition, teenagers on their way home from college, a bunch of friends laughing wildly over coffee, women looking at showrooms in awe, a child dressed in bright yellow with an ice-cream in her hand and glee on her face.

What would their stories be, I wondered.

I go a little further to see a different set of people. The working class--men driving through a terrible traffic jam, women waiting to board a cab, people walking to their closest destination with a laptop bag, and some with a bag full of groceries.

But you know what was the common thing? It was the fatigue that was written all over their faces.

What do we work for?

Is it for the corner office? It is for the even cushy corner office? Is it for that much coveted lifestyle that our friends take pride in? Is it for fulfilling the dreams of our parents? Is it for paying our bills? Is it for the ailing children at home? Is it for creating a name in the society? I don't know. There could be a lot of things.

No matter what we do and what we say, I believe that we all work towards that one dream that has been giving us nightmares since childhood. A dream that has been simply pushing us to make our lives beautiful. I mean, it is just a small dream that keeps us awake in the night. Of course, it is a tiny dream that influences everything we say, and every step we take.

And sometimes, it is just a vague dream that makes us let go of our relationships, tampering them, and ends up being a sour moment between our parents as well; a trivial dream that never leaves our mind though we hide it under the fibers of our brain hoping it would wean away. Someday.

But guess what? That dream is here to stay!

And if you have no clue on what your dream is, keep exploring and experimenting with a lot of things. You will get there.

Because we all deserve that lovely story that we can tell our grandchildren under a starlit sky.

The Last Ride!

     “Can I ask you something?
      Anything.
Why is it every time we say goodnight, it feels like goodbye?”

     ― Lang Leav
The night was darker than usual, the lights at a distant were brighter than ever. Standing there, stealing sly glances at each other, they waited to fill their silence with words.
Amidst all the rush, the occasional breeze and the slight drizzle stirred their thoughts.
It was hard to say how long they waited for the cab. But the relief on their faces was obvious as they spotted it approaching them.
As they got into it, she waited for him to break the silence. And he did, with an awkward smile that refused to reach his eyes.
She took the cue, and let him entwine their fingers, and rested her head ever so lightly on his shoulder. Occupational hazards, he whined.
Regular bouts of fights, contradictions, and misunderstandings took a toll on their relationship. They did not let it affect their relationship though. He understood her retorts as she understood his silence.
She let it go but during their playful banter, she said, “You'd miss me when I am gone.”
Being a firm believer of ‘forever’, he asked her to refrain from all the absurd talk. Every conversation about staying apart was conveniently put aside. They were meant to be, he claimed.

Too delusional, and absorbed in each other, they failed to realize the most beautiful thing they shared would end that night.
He went home with his white shirt stained with her lipstick stains, and she with his aroma draped around her, not knowing it was their last ride together.

Writer's Block Is Not Really A Real Thing!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Sunday, November 30, 2014 0 comments

“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”
― Sylvia Plath

OKAY.

I haven't been writing much these days. I mean, for the blog. I cannot literally claim that I haven't been writing anything at all because I make a living out of it.

I opened my laptop to write today only because I could not handle the conversations between my sister and her best friend. The conversations about relationships and breakups of their juniors in school.

Seriously, the only thing I cared about as a schoolgirl was having a set of Faber Castell’s colouring pens or math homework, and my world was all sorted. But the children these days, I tell you. They talk about serious relationships.

Girls, give me a break. Serious relationships are not something we decide on. They just happen. And I am not really sure if they happen when you are 16. But if they do, God bless you. You are missing out on all the fun.

Take it from a 23 year old. Alright?

I digress.

Alright, so, like I said, I haven't been writing much on my blog. I would like to blame my work for it, but, I cannot. Because I find everything so drab these days. You know what I mean?

It is just that 50 shades of grey is far more interesting than my life.

Anyway. The first thing that came to my head was writer’s block. But writer’s block is not really a real thing. It does not even exist.

The second thing that came to my head was–maybe I needed major drama in my life. Or experience melancholia.

Rubbish.

I was just looking for reasons to avoid doing the one thing I love the most and I have no clue why.

So here's the deal-I am letting the hibernation mode go off the hook, and I will write a little more than often. If I don't, just send me some hate mail.

That drama would surely slap some sense into my head.

Also, I am sorry to break your eternal bubble of imprecise thoughts. Writer's block isn't a real thing. Just pick that pen and paper and brew some stories today.

Because you need to.

A Way Back Into Love: A Short Story

By Sunaina Patnaik at Tuesday, May 27, 2014 16 comments

She watched him as he tossed and turned in bed. His eyes closed, his brows creased, a tiny ray of light from the table lamp danced on his dimple. She wanted to run her fingers on it.

She looked at him. She looked at him and wondered how things have been changing between them. She thought of the days when her world entirely revolved around this man. She looked at this man, and reminisced all the memories that were spent on the streets, goofing around, falling more and more in love.

She sighed and looked at him, and asked herself, "Is he a stranger now?

She put her book away, and turned the light off.

Yet another night was spent staring at the ceiling.

The next morning, she woke up to see the other side of the bed vacant. Unoccupied.

She panicked, and rushed out of the bedroom only to find him in the kitchen, making some coffee and whistling a joyous tune. For a moment, she felt she had lost him forever, and the very sight of him made her smile like a child.

He turned back to find her staring at him intently.

Coffee?

Absolutely!

It rained whole night, leaving them without any choice but to stay indoors. He hated the rain unless she was with him. He hated having coffee unless it was with her. It was a day of his exceptions and even if he was happy, he did not give it away.

As he set the table, she looked at him, something snapped within her and couldn't control her tears any longer.

"Things have changed between us. When I could not find you beside me this morning, I thought you left me for good. I was scared that I would never see you again," she blurted out indistinct words in between her sobs.

He took her arms into his.

"I have spent innumerable sleepless nights going through myriad thoughts. I do not remember at what point of time we started drifting apart, but we did and both of us failed to notice it.

I miss all that we were, and all that we could be. I want to go back to what we were. Small steps, baby?"

"For you, a thousand times over," she said and squealed in joy.

"Oh, how I missed this," he knew what he had to do now.

He absorbed the silence around them. He looked at the raindrops dripping on the window sill. He listened to the music that was softly playing in the head. He closed his eyes, and smiled his glorious dimpled smile.

They found a way back into love!

Oh, Please, No Relationships!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Thursday, May 15, 2014 6 comments

“I mean, if the relationship can't survive the long term, why on earth would it be worth my time and energy for the short term?”

Nicholas Sparks

Long gone are the days when lovers would make everlasting promises, vows of their undying, unfathomably immortal love.

Long gone are the days when a man and a woman wrote letters to each other, distance never mattered, and no problem was bigger than their relationship.

We are in 2014 now. Welcome to the world of commitment phobia!

While you all are free to roll your eyes, I would like to present a closer, and to be precise, a much clearer picture to you.

The man:

It is indeed a challenging phase for a man to make a woman fall in love with him. He will possibly do everything to impress her, he will ditch his friends momentarily and spend all his time, energy, and talent on wooing the girl.

He will travel twenty kilometers to get her an ice-cream because she has a craving.

You look like you have been bitten by the Aphrodite. You are perfect. (Oh come on, even Aamir Khan isn't perfect.)

I will do anything for you, you are worth every risk, he says. I will make sure you never shed a tear, you will be treated like the most precious thing, he says.

There you go, the woman falls in love. The following two months are so ethereal, they are SO Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts that you might wonder if your life was based on your favourite romantic comedy.

If only life was a movie!

Reality hits you, son.

You want to crawl out of the relationship so badly that you want your gorgeous one to drop dead. You want to go back to the days of being single, where a beer can with your guy friends gave you more joy than the supposedly most beautiful woman in the world.

All of a sudden, you want your life to be Indian Jones. And not some filthy romantic comedy.

Love eventually fades, you say that, and you walk away. It is alright to be selfish.

You deserve better things. It is not you, it is me. (If she was so good in the first place, why would you let her pass?)

And then, you turn into a freak who becomes notoriously serious about career overnight. *Slow claps*

The woman:

I have no clue why the world says that women turn prettier and rosier when in love.

We basically don a pair of rose tinted glasses and go oblivious to all the things happening around us. In a relationship, a man and a woman function differently.

In the initial stages of a relationship, while a man showers a woman with an obscene amount of attention, the woman does not. And she turns insanely, neurotically obsessed with you in the later stages, and the man simply wants to play FIFA or whatever with his male fraternity.

In the initial stages, you take an effort to dress up for your man, laugh at this eternally stupid jokes, and think he is utterly intelligent, and sometimes, you tend to give in to men with an IQ way lower than yours.

Happens! You've put on your tinted glasses, didn't you? You did not just turn almost blind, you have turned deaf as well.

Days pass, and you regain your wits little by little.

You don't dress up for him any longer. Yet, your whole world orbits around him. How ridiculous is that? You do not give him any space. You scare him off.

You have a problem with everything he does. His jokes turn lame, his habits annoy you.

My love has not turned obsolete. I need to save the relationship, you say it yourself and to that best friend between tearful sobs.

You give another shot at trying to reform the man. The poor soul does almost everything to turn into an image that he is not. Because he loves you, and your obnoxiously self centered habits do not annoy him yet.

Finally, you break up with him saying he is not the man you fell in love with. CLASSIC!

Why don't you just save yourself the heart-ache and avoid this eternally messed up thing? For we are in the era of commitment phobia where we let go of our relationships because of petty things which would not have mattered to lovers decades ago.

Disclaimer: Folks who are leading the fairy tale love story, this post isn't for you. The earth is still revolving around the Sun because of awesome people like you.

Is Love Losing Its Grandeur?

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, March 14, 2014 6 comments

I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things.”
-John Green

After a long day of work, my friend and I found some free time at the end of the day when we had a brief conversation on how the essence of love, the most overrated yet underrated emotion, has been changing over the past few years. It is quite astonishing that the only emotion that makes anything possible is losing its immortality.

How? Let me tell you how.

Let us not talk about the fairy tales, the romantic comedies, or the fictional stories that promise you the happy endings. Let us not talk about fantasies or the fragments of imagination. Let us talk about the real stuff. The profound stuff, as an intellect might want to say. Let us talk about how love has shamefully transformed from whoa to ugh.

To be precise, let us talk about how people have transformed from being beautiful to being vile in the name of changing times. No, do not talk about being practical. No, don't just get me started. Shhh, just listen to me.

Let us, for a moment, forget all the fables and talk about our parents. Our parents lived in the era-the early 90s, when everything was limited, luxuries were expensive, communication was finite. Of course, they lead a far splendid lives than ours and it makes me shudder to actually say that relationships were everlasting in their era. How many sorts of communication did they even have? They did not have Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. No social media at all. Nada!

I vividly remember all the days when my father would stay months away from home, and my mother would wait for one phone call that would come at 8 P.M. and the days when my mother would go to her native place, my father would look at the clock anticipating a similar phone call.

Do you remember the days people wrote letters to their lovers, stayed away from each other for months yet were together? Do you know of the times when every problem had a solution? The days when lack of communication hardly mattered; the days when people had to put up a tough fight to attain something they really needed.

These days, luxury is affordable, communication is forever happening, and lovers stay in touch all the time. Like, seriously! In spite of having everything together, why are people of our generation failing in loving people? Why are we falling flat in putting someone else's interests above our's?

When you fall in love with a person, you will have to accept the fact that you will face severe adversities. Love is melancholic too. Would you let go of someone just because it is painful? How do you think our parents survived the distance without any mode of communication? Don't you think the people in the archaic times fell in love? If it wasn't worth it, trust me, nothing would have existed. Nothing!

In a world where it is possible to find the most distant star in the Universe, is it too much to ask for true love unabashedly?

And before you go back to whatever you were doing, I would like you to ask yourself one thing.

Is love losing its grandeur?

I Hate You. I Am Not Playing Hard To Get!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, October 25, 2013 3 comments

It's astonishing how few men fail to understand that you plainly do not like them. Does it ever happen to you? You know you clearly tell a guy you don't even have a tiny iota of interest in him, and yet he fails to decipher that simple statement and labels you as a woman who is playing hard to get. Like, really?

Stop hallucinating. Seriously. If a woman likes you, why in the world would she play hard to get? She might definitely fool around for a day or two but months? No idiot will play hard to get for several months, okay? If a woman really likes you, she wouldn't want to waste much time fooling around you. She exactly wants the same thing that you want. I cannot fathom how men hallucinate SO much when it comes to this. I mean, yes, women whine a lot but they get accustomed to the reality sooner or later. But the creepy men? Well, they never do. How do you have so much patience to irk the poor woman in every possible way?

It is a known fact that we all like people that we cannot get. For instance, my eternal love for Jude Law or Ian Somerhalder. (Fine, stop rolling your eyes, I'll shut my mouth.) Men, to be specific, find this typically challenging. Though, sometimes, women like to play the mind games. I admit. But not with everyone, alright? We play mind games with the men we like. And if we really like you, we will talk to you, even if we are busy, even if we are dreaming our guts out in that neverland, we will talk to you. It is as simple as that. If we are ignoring you, it just means that we are not interested in you. Dear men, you don't need a PhD in psychology to understand this, do you?

Sometimes, it is outright annoying to receive e-mails and messages from people whom you so badly want to ignore. It is creepy. I have zero tolerance levels and I cannot put up with this non-sense. Women totally do appreciate it when men like them. But you know, there is a saturation point for the appreciation too. At some point, we lose it. We wouldn't like to carry a crappy burden on ourselves for an eternity. And if you lack the basic understanding skills to acknowledge this, please go hang yourself. Also, congratulations! You are unfit for a relationship. If you fail to understand such a simple thing, you cannot understand the complicated things that come and fall flat on your face when you are in a relationship. It's ludicrous, isn't it?

Now, let me just repeat it again. I am not playing hard to get. I am just trying to get away from creepy men like you who plan their entire lives around women. What a shame!

Let's Be Foolish!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Monday, October 14, 2013 6 comments

“Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.”

People who have been reading my blog, and tweets sensed that I was going through a really stupid phase, and a lot of them sent me sweet emails and messages. One sweet girl sent me a book from my wishlist. I feel loved. Thank you so much!

Obnoxious and difficult. Two words that ideally describe me. You know there are millions of us who are strong and extremely stubborn when it comes to emotions. We do not compromise; we do not settle for anything less than what we deserve but at certain point, we totally break down. SO much that we are irrevocably lost in molasses of thoughts and give up on everything. Big mistake! I mean, why don't we realize that it is just a bad phase? Not a bad life.

We need to make our own mistakes. We need to learn our own lessons. Everywhere on the internet, in books and in virtual reality, you see people doling out advice. I do too. Never follow any of them. Someone will always ask you not to do the mistake they have done. Shut up, do not listen to them. Commit mistakes. In fact, make an avalanche of mistakes. Certainly, you are young and  imbecile and you can get away with being called a juvenile (We are in India. Juveniles are entitled to many privileges.) Cut yourself some slack, and do whatever you want to do. It is okay to be hurt. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Also, this is something very important. Let relationships be relationships. Do not let them get to you. You know like do not make major sacrifices for them. Never. Remember what Lady Gaga said? “Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you anymore.”
Leaving your job, career, college and go behind a guy? Not a cool thing. Surely, never commit this mistake.

Be the leading lady in your life. Do not let someone control you, or your emotions. If someone doesn't respect you or makes you feel inferior, do yourself a favour, and kick them out of your life. Do not stay with anyone who snatches happiness away from you. You deserve something beautiful. Listening?

Be foolish. Get high. Hang out with friends. Go out with interesting people. Read good books. Read Murakami and Pablo Neruda. Take interest in linguistic activities. Eat out at good places. Take photographs. Listen to good music. Travel a lot. Spend your money on traveling. Even if the place is just around the corner. Love yourself. And make these memories a testament to your awesome life.

Note to self: Live the Barney Stinson life. Not Ted Mosby's!

Your Favourite Thing Is No Longer A Favourite!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Wednesday, August 28, 2013 2 comments

But the absolute worst was when people asked if I was okay. Because then I had to admit that it was real, it happened, and we weren't together anymore.”

A week ago, I received a message from a girl who was grieving over her break-up. She asked me to write a post about her relationship. This post is definitely not about her relationship. This post is about the things which were once our favourite transform into not SO favourite things during/after a break-up. For instance, let us talk about sitcoms. Consider yourself lucky, if your ex doesn't watch sitcoms. (Yippee!) If he does, well, do not share your favourite sitcoms with him. Let me warn you, each time you watch that favourite episode of yours, you do not see Joey in it, no, you don't. In fact, you see your ex. So rule no. 1, never watch your favourite sitcoms with anyone. (Your ex as Joey is such a blasphemy, I tell you. I mean, it is Joey for Christ's sake.)

But let me tell you what's the worst thing-your favourite restaurants. I mean, how many of us have literally stopped going to our favourite restaurants after break-ups because they trigger all the old memories and makes us go...you know...damn, you know it. If you are a foodie and you love your favourite restaurant, don't share it with anyone because you wouldn't want to sit and sulk at the place which was once your favourite corner. Oh dear!

Sometimes, ice-creams helps you a lot to come out of terrible situations. Yes, a second serving helps you a lot more and an entire tub of it just solves all your problems. I know people are always telling us things that we don't want to hear, and we sort of stay in denial during these times. Who are we kidding, anyway? My girl friend (and she happens to be my 3 A.M. friend) tells me ice-cream therapy doesn't work. She tells me that her favourite flavour of ice-cream gives her panic attacks. I wish I could roll my eyes. I wish. But I couldn't for the fact that she would read this post. So she tells me how Oreo Peanut Butter ice cream was her favourite, and how she and her ex shared it almost everyday. (Well! Why don't I get to eat that shit everyday) And she tells me between sobs and hiccups that she is not able to forget him or eat her favourite flavour of ice-cream that she used to eat everyday.

The woes just don't end here. My friend tells me that he regrets sharing his playlist with ex because it reminds him of her. I mean, seriously, every time, you fish out that iPod of yours, and listen to your favourite track by Coldplay, what happens? It simply drifts you into not so pleasant memories or like in my case, very pleasant memories because I never dared to share my playlist with anyone else. Isn't a playlist like a personal diary, duh? It is. Every bit. Never share it, okay?

Your favourite restaurants, songs, movies, sitcoms, food, and you get the drift, right? All these things are no longer your favourite. They remind you of things that are no longer yours. I know right. So, when you eventually lose a person anyway, why do you want to gamble with your favourite sitcoms, ice-cream or restaurants? Sometimes, it is nice to be selfish and keep your favourites to yourself instead of sharing them with your partners, because your favourite things should help you to come out of the trauma. Not increase your trauma.

Can We Stop The PDA, Already? :O

By Sunaina Patnaik at Friday, August 23, 2013 1 comments

Hello people! I am traumatized. Like, really really. I turned up at work after a long period and everything feels so NEW. For instance, I see this couple doing rounds all over the office painting it in red. Do not get me wrong there. I love couples, people in love, and all that jazz. I love couples who claim their love for each other to each other, you know? Not to the entire work-place. I mean, gosh!

I completely understand. We all have quite endearing nick-names for our loved ones and it evokes a certain amount of pleasure to call them. Yes, I agree. But calling people as "Shona" and "Babushka" at work-place or in public in a voice that is higher than 10000 decibels? Not a cool thing.

I know, it is amazing that you have a partner with whom you could share every freaking thing but hello? You don't have to let the entire universe know that. And oh, since few of us here don't have anyone out there to share everything and look forward to, we feel like shit. Too much of love, baba! Of course, I do have my blog with whom (and where) I share everything. Oh yessssssss! My blog is the best thing that has happened to me, so may be, I should write a meaningful love letter for my adorable blog? Okay, I'll shut up.

Let's face it. Couples who go head over heels for each other in public aren't the epic examples of love. I mean have you ever come across William Shakespeare's protagonists calling each other "muffin" in the public? Okay, I know they are fictional characters. While gushing over each other and whispering sweet nothings is a nice thing and all that, doing so in the public just attracts brick bats.

And on an unrelated note, ladies, please stop acting dumb with a guy. If a guy does not like you for what you are, then there is no point in changing yourself for him. Acting dumb is a big no-no. You listening?

So what do you think happens if you go all mushy-mushy in front of a zillion spectators? Of course, not the "Brangelina" sort of mushy-mushy which we, the weak-hearted people, could tolerate. Well, this is what happens:

1) You are a laughing stock of those zillion spectators. And they just go around talking about you to their friends. Do you want to be that?
2) You are the only topic of discussion during sleep-overs and girls night-outs. How creepy is that?
3) Occasional blog-posts from cold hearted people like me. (Sniff! I know we don't understand your eternal love.)

Okay. I am done. Bye.

It Is Not a Cake-walk, Baby!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Wednesday, May 15, 2013 7 comments

"I love you. You complete me."
"Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at hello."
-Jerry Maguire

So, I sit down with a tub of ice-cream and watch Jerry Maguire. I love this movie for two reasons-Tom Cruise and the movie is epic, isn't it?

Basically, I am a sucker for romantic comedies. Of course, I do like the occasional superhero movies, horror and goth, and the like but the movie section of my laptop is majorly filled with romantic comedies.

I am quite intrigued by the 90s movies..you know Pretty Woman, Jerry Maguire, When Harry Met Sally(1989 though), Before Sunrise and I wonder if things have massively changed in the 2000s. And frankly, they have! Things have changed from "It must have been love" in 'Pretty Woman' to "You spin my head right round" in 'The Ugly Truth' and it makes me go oww!

That is the moment I started relating things with reality. Have the times changed too? Well, yes, they have. I mean, do we still have those people who say, "I will stick to you through dreadful misery and stand by your side in the gloomy times"? Or is it just that all I see are those who say, "Hey you know what? We held onto each other in all the joy and mirth. Why stick to each other during pain? Let us choose the easy way out and chuck out all the drama, trauma and yeah, whatever. So we done?"

Of course, it is not so simple, right? We all go through problems. Crappy problems, messy problems, problems that do not even come into the vicinity of problems, tiny problems, and the metaphors! The other day, my friend updated a huge Facebook status for her boy-friend. She was questioning his love for her on a social networking site for not recharging her damned mobile phone on time. DUH!!!! Really? Is that even a problem? Girl, do you actually know what a problem really is?

I don't know! We all live in this selfish, cynical world and we never give a thought about what is worth and what is not. Isn't it simple? I mean, seriously, would you want to lose someone so close to you just for a recharge card? It is not about the recharge card, actually. It is about letting minute things spoil our relationships. Not just with our partners or whatever but with our friends too.

We all make mistakes. Isn't it? I have done tons of them and yes, I know, writing this post does not make me a saint. I jump to the worst conclusions in a matter of seconds and mess up with my head. And by the time, I realize what I have done, it is too late. The damage is already done, nay? What could you do about it? Honestly, nothing! But you do not stop cribbing either.

So, well, may be, we should all give a lot of thought before blowing up things, and you know, updating silly Facebook statuses that are nothing but cringe-worthy. As an after-thought, you can actually tweet about them. Ha! Anyway, we should just think and act. Like..like...umm...you know the way we act when we do Math?

Relationships add so much to your life. Likewise, they pull a lot away. It is for us to decide if it worth it. Love does not need hard work but sustaining the complications and the plights need a lot of hard work and you should be ready to do it every freaking day.

You do not have to open the pandora's box and say, "Hey, it is easy." Instead, say, "It is horrid but I shall find a way out" for relationships are not a cake-walk, baby!

Five Relationship Myths!

By Sunaina Patnaik at Saturday, February 23, 2013 9 comments

It is strange how we read books, watch novels and hallucinate that every relationship is perfect. You know it is just the same story in fiction--Boy meets girl, girl meets boy, they exchange looks, books, texts and bam! They are so into each other, ignore the world around them, run around the trees and creepers and run into the sunset. And most of these books and movies seem to be interesting. Obviously! But they display so many myths. For instance, let me list them down.

1. Relationships survive and happen only to the good-looking people: God! This is such a common one, right? The protagonists in the book are always like Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie. Of course, most of us will abandon the books that have ugly protagonists so, I won't talk like a saint here.

The thing I am trying to point here is the stories that portray how a boy ignores the girl, the girl sits and cries, and it suddenly dawns on her that things can change and turns from drab to fab overnight. Chi!

2. Fights are a proof that a relationship has reached the saturation point:

Duh? Shut up! It isn't like that.
Ages ago, my uncle told me that the moment we stop fighting with our partners is when the relationship has reached the saturation because you simply do not care. You just let them be.

3. People with similar nature and perceptions are the best for each other:

Oh yeah? And get bored of the person in two months? Because you are just too similar and you feel like you are in a relationship with yourself. Or may be, not.

But hey this is just my perception. It is my blog. I rule. :P

4. Couples who are in a relationship for a very long period are the happiest couples:

Of course! The others are the sad, demented ones who are probably in a delusional phase till they attain the veteran status and they automatically turn happy and joyous. Sweet, sweet life!

5. Awesome couples do everything together:

And scare the crap out of people around them. You know what? You aren't Siamese twins. Awesome couples need space and have individuality. Demented couples act clingy and do things together.

P.S. If any reader finds these points similar to their life, I am sorry. No pun intended. No, really!
